How often am I expected to work?

Hospital volunteers work an average of 4 hours per week. We ask for a minimum of 100 hours per year. Community programs – hours vary

How am I trained for my role?

Volunteers attend a general orientation and on-the-job training for their specific role.

What type of screening is required to volunteer?

An interview is done in an individual or group setting

  • Volunteers over the age of 18 must pass a criminal background check
  • 2 letters of reference (non-relatives)
  • Health screening clearance, including TB test for all and immunization titers for some service areas*

*TB testing and titers can be done at no cost. You will receive information at your interview.

Are there specific education requirements for volunteers?

By federal regulations, volunteers must meet similar standards as employees. There are mandatory education modules completed when you become a volunteer, then annually.

What if I am ill, on vacation or need time off from my role?

Dependability and attendance are important to the daily operations and success of the services we provide. Absences are an inevitable part of volunteering. We ask that you personally contact the identified person in your service area. This will be discussed at your orientation. There are specific policies about leaves of absences.

What do I wear when volunteering?

All volunteers are assigned a Beaumont Volunteer Badge. This is to be worn whenever you are volunteering.

HOSPITAL Volunteer Uniform

  • Volunteers in the hospital are required to wear the mandatory uniforms (purchased from the volunteer office).
  • Volunteers have the option of wearing a red jacket or red polo shirt.
  • Black slacks, socks and shoes are worn to complete the uniform.

The Parenting Program, Spiritual Care and Hospice volunteers are not in a uniform but wear clothes appropriate for their role. Guidelines will be provided.

Where do I park?

Parking options are different depending on the site. Please see your volunteer coordinator.

Can I bring my electronic devices with me when I volunteer?

Electronic devices, such as, cell phones, iPods, smart phones, computers, pagers, etc., must be turned off while you volunteer. These can be distracting to those you serve and may interfere with the medical equipment in the hospital.

Are there benefits offered to volunteers at Beaumont?

Volunteers tell us the number one benefit is helping others. You must be an active volunteer and show your Beaumont Volunteer badge for identification. Volunteers receive discounts in the pharmacy, invitations to team member events, and at some area businesses.

Are there programs specifically for high school and college students?

There are limited opportunities specific to those seeking educational experiences. Volunteers must be 16 years of age to begin. A minimum of 100 hours is required. Check Opportunities for more information on specific programs. Internships are provided in some programs.

If I volunteer at Beaumont, will I have a better chance of getting a job in the system?

Volunteering is a great way to enhance your resume, but does not increase your potential of a paid position. If you are seeking employment, go to the Beaumont website careers link to explore options.

Can I volunteer at Beaumont for court ordered hours?

No, Beaumont does not accept volunteers requiring court ordered hours.
